A few months ago (was it really that long ago??) 2 of my knitting groups got together for a sock dying party. We bought some pre-knit undyed sock yarn and went to town with the dye. After the sock blank is dyed, you unravel the sock blank and knit 2 identical socks. Gail and Beth were the first knitters in the group to finish making socks with their blanks. On Sunday, Gail brought her finished socks to the knitting group at Tango Cafe.
Beautiful! Gail’s socks are a basic rib on the calf and stockinette stitch instep. These are pretty long socks, and you can even see how much yarn was left over from one sock in the 2nd picture. Quite a big ball. You could even make some baby socks with the leftovers, I suppose, or just knit some awesome Pippi Longstocking socks toe up until you run out of yarn.
I think it’s so mysterious how the colors turn out in the piece of knitting. I suppose the only pattern you could reasonably predict would be stripes. Beth also made some socks from her sock blank, and I’ll ask her to bring them with her the next time she’s at the Wed night Stitch ‘N Bitch. Just gotta remember to bring my camera!
FYI, if you plan to dye sock blanks yourself from Knit Picks, be aware that the color chartreuse looks like fluorescent green. Very pretty, just not what we were expecting.
