I’m currently working on Tonya Wagner’s Isotope Hat from Knotions. The other day I received some less than encouraging comments from someone whose opinion I (usually) hold dear. “It looks like a brain”, he said. Really?? Now before I proceed, the fact that my hat is purported to look like the inside of a noggin has nothing whatsoever to do with the pattern or designer. The hat pictured in Tonya’s pattern is lovely, which is why I decided to knit it. This spectacle is all my doing, I guess.
Here are the specifics:
Yarn: The Fibre Company Khroma WW, 50% alpaca, 50% merino
Colorway: Bougainvillea (redish-purple)
Gauge: 18 sts = 4 inches (approx) on size 8 US needles
Since I only have 2 skeins of this lovely yarn, and I know I’m going to run out before I finish, I thought I’d rip back to only 4 cable repeats instead of 5. This may help it look less, ummm, well, brain-ish.
So, Leute, what do you think? Does it look like a brain? Yes, no? I need advice! Help!

Hmmm….no, said hat doesn’t currently look like a brain. Sometimes, it’s hard to tell what a hat will look like off the needles. I try to do all mine top down for that reason.
With your delicate features and pretty long hair, you are a perfect tight-fitting hat candidate. And if the hat ends up puffing out beyond your skull….I can see where the title Brainiac might be in your future.
Let’s see, shall we? There are ways of fixing everything…….
Yes, I guess poofy beret type hats aren’t really my style. So maybe this hat will be a Xmas gift after all…
I think it looks more like a raspberry!
Its very pretty though and looks warm!
Well, that “someone” just returned from the 2008 meeting of the Society for Neuroscience. Given that, it is probably not a big surprise that most things look like brains, neurons, or synapses
Ok, but since you said it looks like a brain, now I can’t get the image of a brain out of my head. But I rather like the idea of a raspberry hat. And it does look a little like a raspberry, too. That sounds nicer than a brain.
I’d go for “raspberry” first before I would say it looks like a brain.
But, you could just call it your “thinking cap” and call it day.
It looks beautiful in person; photos online don’t do it justice!
I’m thinking raspberry colored artichoke.
She wore a raspberry beret…
I finished the hat, apart from sewing in ends. I’ve decided that this hat, although it’s lovely, doesn’t suit me. So I’m gifting it. Hopefully it will look better on the recipient!
